Telstra Child Flight retrieves Central Coast Newborn
Telstra Child Flight, the only emergency helicopter transport service
in the Southern Hemisphere dedicated solely to the retrieval of kids
had to make an emergency dash to the Central Coast to retrieve newborn
Mackenzie from North Gosford Private Hospital after spending only
24 hours in this world.
Tiny Mackenzie was delivered by caesarean section six weeks early
after his mother Michelle began bleeding.
'' We were very excited about the impending arrival of our newborn
- we just weren't expecting him quite so early!''
Doctors realised that Mackenzie was having difficulty breathing
and would require intensive paediatric care. At this point Telstra
Child Flight was called in to transport Mackenzie from the Central
Coast to Royal North Shore hospital for treatment.
On arrival to Royal North Shore, doctors placed Mackenzie on a ventilator
and transported him to ICU for treatment and monitoring.
After two days on a ventilator he made a quick recovery and was
moved from intensive care to the high dependency unit followed by
the special care unit. Mackenzie spent a total of eight days at Royal
North Shore followed by another six days at North Gosford Private
before he was discharged home.
'' We are overjoyed our new son can now join us at home. I cannot
thank the Telstra Child Flight team enough for their professional
and speedy expertise in saving my son's life.''
The Telstra Child Flight choppers aim to dramatically reduce the amount of
time it takes to transport a child to a hospital that can cater to their needs.
The choppers are the fastest medical helicopters in NSW.
Each mission costs between $6,000 and $15,000 and is provided at no charge
to the families who require Telstra Child Flights assistance. While major sponsor
Telstra provides considerable support, Telstra Child Flight relies heavily
on the generosity of the public to help make up for shortfalls of millions
of dollars every year, to ensure that the service stays in the air.
