A big fall for little Olivia

Two year old Olivia was enjoying the afternoon with her twin brothers on the family’s balcony, taking in the sights of the backyard. When Olivia climbed the railing, balancing on her stomach, she lost her balance and took a terrifying five metre drop to the concrete below.

Olivia’s mother Amanda, was alerted to the accident by the screams of Olivia’s brothers and raced to the balcony only to realise that Olivia was no longer on it, but lying on the ground below.

“Words cannot adequately describe the hollow feeling in the pit of my stomach when I saw Olivia lying on the concrete and the realisation that she had fallen all that way. I rushed downstairs to her and instantly realised that she was very seriously injured. I called the ambulance and they rushed her to Wollongong Hospital for treatment.’’

On arrival Olivia was diagnosed with severe head trauma including a fractured skull from ear to ear, bleeding on the brain and swelling.

It was decided that the Telstra Child Flight chopper would be called to transport Olivia from Wollongong to the Children’s Hospital at Randwick where she could receive the specialist treatment that she required.

Upon arrival Olivia was placed in a drug induced coma and taken to the intensive care unit. Olivia spent the following five days in hospital before being released.

Olivia is now on the road to recovery and most of the bruising to her head is beginning to fade.

Amanda is relieved and pleased with her daughter’s recovery and wished to thank Telstra Child Flight.

“The staff were so professional and courteous and kept me informed throughout the entire heart wrenching experience. Thank You.’’
