Double trouble for the TCF team

For Naomi Croker it was simply a case of no room at the inn. Nine weeks of bed rest had done nothing to stave off the labour of her twins, and a case of the flu and a persistent cough did little to help matters. While the birth of her boys was meant to take place at Canberra Hospital, Naomi and partner Nathan made it to Goulburn Hospital, where they were told their twins would be delivered, as Naomi’s bed at Canberra was booked for three months time.

For the best possible outcome, Naomi was to be transported via helicopter to Sydney to deliver her babies, however her labour was far too advanced to consider transportation of this nature. The Telstra Child Flight chopper was put on stand by in preparation of this premature delivery, in anticipation that one or both of the twins would need emergency transportation.

The prediction was right on the money, as the chopper was called in to transport Nate and Kye Scanes to Canberra Hospital. Kye was loaded onto the chopper at Goulburn Hospital as soon as he was stabilised. For reasons of logistics, Nate was transported to the local airport where Telstra Child Flight reunited him with his brother. Naomi joined her sons as soon as a bed became available at the receiving hospital.

Both boys, weighing approximately 1 kilogram each, were suffering breathing difficulties, as their lungs were too immature to cope outside of the womb. The Neonatal intensive care unit at Canberra Hospital was home for the next few months, as the twins lungs grew stronger and they put on weight. Their time in NICU was not without set back, with both Nate and Kye experiencing heart complications, which corrected themselves and bowel infections that were cleared up with a course of antibiotics.

At six months old Nate and Kye are happy, healthy and growing steadily. While they’re fraternal twins, Naomi says the boys are very similar in behaviour and character.

Nathan said “We were so lucky that Telstra Child Flight was available to transport our boys. We cannot thank the team enough for the great job that they did.”
